POSITION TITLE: Wilderness Stewardship and Outreach Manager

Responsible for managing the Wilderness Ranger Program and seasonal activities associated with New Mexico Wild’s collaborative agreement with USDA, Forest Service Southwestern Region to complete projects that advance Wilderness Performance Measure for designated areas in New Mexico. Additional responsibilities include management of Community Outreach to sustain and increase membership and volunteer involvement in stewardship of New Mexico’s public lands.

The Wilderness Stewardship and Outreach Manager reports to the Deputy Director working in close consultation with other senior staff and Forest Service partners to supervise up to ten seasonal Wilderness Rangers. The position will also be responsible for organizing community outreach and stewardship activities, while helping to implement the organizational member plan, with a particular emphasis on diversification including youth and communities of color through a variety of strategies.

Wilderness Ranger Program Responsibilities

• Manage the Wilderness Ranger program. Hire, train and lead Wilderness Rangers throughout the field season (May-September) with a focus on monitoring invasive species, trails, water quality, solitude, primitive and unconfined recreation, and recreation sites in accordance with Forest Service Wilderness Stewardship Performance protocols and volunteer engagement goals.
• Supervise multiple small teams in a variety of wilderness backcountry and front-country settings on specific assigned tasks including coordination of staff schedules and tasks
• Utilize ArcGIS to set up data collection applications and manage Wilderness Ranger data for delivery to appropriate Forest Service Office with final season reports.
• Work with land management agencies to identify stewardship projects needs and maintenance issues;
• Oversee reporting and project deliverables for Wilderness Ranger Program;

Outreach Manger Responsibilities

• Develop and lead a variety of volunteer service projects and hikes for members and prospective members;
• Make presentations to relevant community groups and associations;
• Arrange meetings, activities and tabling events for membership recruitment
• Be able to speak to any of New Mexico Wild’s conservation and stewardship efforts;
• Participate in Advancement meeting and related functions, such as marketing, design/preparation of print materials, event logistics and post-event follow up;
• Participate in special assignments or projects as representative of the organization;
• Organize and participate in a variety of events throughout the year to engage and educate the community about wilderness.


The ideal candidate will have a passion for wildlands conservation and bring experience with both backcountry wilderness, stewardship and community-based organizations.

Minimum Requirements

• Supervisory experience
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking;
• Strong organizational and project management skills;
• Demonstrated ability to multitask, handle deadlines, determine and manage priorities;
• Experience with ArcGIS and other data collection platforms.

Knowledge and Abilities Required

• Knowledge of wilderness principles, concepts, policies, and objectives;
• Ability to implement environmental and natural resource monitoring techniques;
• Practical knowledge of backcountry travel, natural resources, and land management operations sufficient to perform work assignments within wilderness;
• Ability to supervise multiple people; coordinate and lead volunteer crews
• Ability to identify invasive plant species, conduct trail assessments, utilize primitive tools, perform trail and campsite maintenance, and use a handheld GPS device for data collection;
• Ability to work both independently and with a team, including coordination with New Mexico Wild and Forest Service staff;
• Knowledge of ArcGIS or other mapping software and data analysis a plus;
• Valid state-issued Driver’s License required;
• Access to personal vehicle for travel to and from work sites will be required for some positions. Mileage for work-related activities will be reimbursed.
• A passion for wildlands conservation;
• 3 years experience in community based non-profit organization; and
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

Familiarity with the geography of the state of New Mexico desired. Bilingual preferred.

Special Job Requirements:
Significant in-state travel.
Some evening and weekend hours as needed.
