Forest Service Planning

The Carson, Cibola, and Santa Fe National Forest have all released draft management plans. Simply put, the plans don't do enough to protect New Mexico's Wilderness, wildlife, or water.

The public has from now until November 7 to weigh in on each of the plans. Below you will find a public meeting schedule for each of the three forests, as well as a link to submit an official written comment for each plan.

New Mexico Wild has proposed a 120,000-acre expansion of the Pecos Wilderness and a 5,240-acre addition to the Cruces Basin Wilderness that would be achieved largely by incorporating the designated inventoried roadless areas bordering the existing Wilderness areas. Neither expansion is included in the Carson’s draft management plan.

Cibola National Forest

New Mexico Wild has proposed a nearly 300,000-acre expansion of the Wilderness areas within the Cibola. Less than ten percent of that total is included in the Cibola’s preferred forest management plan. That means no expansion for the Withington Wilderness or protections for the Datil Mountains, Magdalena Mountains, Panther Canyon, or Scott Mesa.

Santa Fe National Forest

New Mexico Wild has proposed a 120,000-acre expansion of the Pecos Wilderness to protect these sensitive ecosystems, but the Santa Fe National Forest’s preferred plan of action includes very little of the expansion we have proposed. The result could be more logging, mining, and road-building activities that make it far more difficult for wildlife to thrive.
